Going wild!

Once upon a time, leopard prints were not a trend and only wery chic or very tacky ladies dared to wear it. In those days, this princess met a leopard blouse, fell in love with it and they lived happy ever after. That is, until her weight loss put an end to her love affair with most of her clothes, including the prince charming ones.

I was the princess, of course, and this most comfortable leopard blouse became hard to wear, for it it's several sizes beyond my current one. The way to keep going with it was to tuck it in, paired it with my jeans, which are still tight enough and add a pop of color with the red. Besides being "my color", red goes very well with animal prints in general. I had other bold color choices which I thought were fine, but none gave me this classy look that red provided.

A word for accessories and make up and hair: don't over do it! I went for the ponytail because I knew I'd have a busy day and it would give me a cleaner look, altough I'm not a big fan of it. I picked up the red lipstick, but I chose a light and classical look for the eyes, to balance it all. The jewelry might have been red, but it would be too much and I prefered to play with golden and mother of pearl instead of going full red.

Once again, less was more... Keep having fun!

Era uma vez um tempo em que o padrão de leopardo não era uma tendência e só as senhoras muito chiques ou muito pirosas se atreviam a usá-lo. Nesse tempo, esta princesa conheceu uma blusa leopardo, apaixonou-se por ela e foram felizes para sempre. Isto é, até a perda de peso ter acabado com o romance dela com as suas roupas, incluindo as peças príncipe-encantado.

Eu era a princesa, claro está, e esta muito confortável blusa de leopardo tornou-se difícil de usar por ser vários números acima do meu. A forma que tive de mantê-la foi colocá-la por dentro dos jeans que ainda são justos o bastante e juntar um toque de cor com o vermelho. Além de ser a "minha cor", o vermelho vai muito bem com os padrões animais em geral. Tinha outras cores fortes em mente, mas nenhuma me dava este toque de classe do vermelho.

Uma palavra para os acessórios e a maquilhagem e o cabelo: não exagerar! Fiz um rabo-de-cavalo porque sabia que o dia ia ser muito cheio e este penteado dar-me-ia um aspecto limpo e arrumado, apesar de não ser grande apreciadora dele. Escolhi o batom vermelho, mas mantive o equilíbrio ao escolher uma maquilhagem leve e clássica para os olhos. A bijuteria poderia ser vermelha, mas achei que era demais e preferi jogar com o dourado e a madrepérola em vez de um vermelho por inteiro. 

Mais uma vez, menos foi mais... Continuem a divertir-se!

Minnie Mouse Mood!

A few days ago, my 7 year-old niece told me that she thought this trenchcoat was like as if it was Minnie Mouse's. I found that so funny that I decided I'd be like Minnie Mouse for a day, minus the red bow!

I've had this polka dot trenchcoat for a few winters, but it's quite light and only get to wear it in spring or fall, the 2 seasons that seem to be on the verge of extinction on this part of the world. In my Minnie Mouse mood, I paired it with black and red, of course, and the silhouette had to be fuller and more like the 50's. My shoes were flatter than Minnie's: since I've got real feet and was out and about all day, I needed comfort more than anything. As far as feet go, I'm more the Cinderella type...

This outfit makes me look a little wider at the bottom, but it was worth it: looking like a Minnie wannabe takes a toll I'd pay anyday. Have fun, mostly in cartoonish ways!

Há alguns dias, a minha sobrinha de 7 anos disse-me que achava que esta gabardina era como se fosse da Minnie. Achei aquilo tão engraçado que resolvi que iria ser como a Minnie por um dia, mas sem o laço vermelho!

Tenho esta gabardina às bolas há alguns invernos, mas é bastante leve e só consigo usá-la na primavera ou no outono, as 2 estações que parecem estar à beira da extinção por estes lados do mundo. No meu modo de Minnie, fiz conjunto com preto e vermelho, claro, e a silhueta tinha que ser mais cheia e mais à moda dos anos 50. Os sapatos são mais rasos do que os da Minnie: dado que tenho pés verdadeiros e andei todo o dia na rua, precisava de conforto acima de tudo. No que respeita a pés, sou mais do tipo Cinderela...

Este conjunto faz-me parecer um pouco mais larga na parte inferior, mas valeu a pena: parecer uma aspirante a Minnie tem um preço que estou sempre disposta a pagar. Divirtam-se, sobretudo como nos desenhos animados!

I'm back!

After the surgery, after the worst part of recovery, after having been to hell, I'm back!

It's been quite an ordeal to live these couple of months. The first 4 weeks were so bad that I wished I was dead, but of course I wasn't, so here I am, back on my feet and into my clothes.

I wore a lot of "home clothing" lately: you know, baggy sweat pants, loose jumpers and that sort. I didn't feel like putting on make up or taking the time (and the efford!) to look any better. Over the past 2 weeks, I started to go out more and the old "fashion bug" came back.

There are a couple of changes in my body that will make me change my style: I lost a lot of weight in less than 6 months and I have a nasty scar across my chest. So, no more cleavages for me, and I'll be showing a few ideas on how to hide heart surgery scars. On the bright side, I must change my entire wardrobe (shopping, here I go!) and I can wear clothes that didn't fit me before.

So, here I'm, in my navy look, wearing my stripes. I love the navy trend and, from what I've seen, it will go a long way this summer. The neckline is just enough to cover the scar and I'm very pleased to be wearing horizontal stripes, something that would look terrible on before.

Red is the perfect color to add to a navy look, classical and still bold. I'm sure I'll be wearing this jumper a lot and I have a few ideas to style it in other ways. Dark denim jeans (the only ones that still fit me...) are just right here and I chose red jewerly to bring more light to the outfit. The red cardigan and the bag I love so much add the touch of color that I wanted.

Have fun, everybody! Life is just too fragile and too short to live it without laughter and fun...

Depois da cirurgia, depois da pior parte da recuperação, depois de ter descido ao inferno, estou de volta!

Tem sido uma provação, viver estes 2 meses. As primeiras 4 semanas foram tão más que desejava estar morta, mas claro que não estava, e por isso estou de volta, e também de regresso às minhas roupas.

Usei muita "roupa de andar por casa" nos últimos tempos: calças de fato de treino largas, camisolas soltas e coisas desse género. Não me apetecia usar maquilhagem nem dar-me ao trabalho (e ao esforço!) de ter uma aparência melhor. Nas últimas 2 semanas, comecei a sair mais  e o velho "bichinho da moda" regressou.

Há algumas mudanças no meu corpo que irão fazer-me mudar o meu estilo.: perdi muito peso nos últimos 6 meses e tenho uma cicatriz feia no meio do meu peito. Por isso, acabaram-se os decotes para mim, e irei mostrar algumas ideias sobre como esconder a cicatriz de cirurgia cardíaca. Pelo lado bom, tenho que mudar todo o meu guarda-roupa (compras, aí vou eu!) e posso usar roupas que antes me ficavam mal.

Aqui estou eu, no meu estilo marinheiro, usando as minhas riscas. Adoro a tendência náutica e, pelo que tenho visto, vai estar em grande neste verão. O decote é apenas o suficiente para tapar a cicatriz e estou muito contente por poder usar riscas horizontais, algo que antes me ficaria muito mal.

O vermelho é a cor perfeita para usar com a tendência náutica, clássica mas também atrevida. Tenho a certeza de ir usar muito esta camisola e tenho ideias sobre como combiná-la de outras formas. Calças de ganga escura (as únicas que ainda me servem...) ficam perfeitas e escolhi bijuteria vermelha para dar mais brilho ao conjunto. O cardigan vermelho e a mala que tanto adoro acrescentam o toque de cor que pretendia.

Divirtam-se todos! A vida é simplesmente demasiado frágil e demasiado curta para se viver ser riso e sem diversão...

Can red lips be casual?

I'm always a bit self conscious when it comes to wear red lips to work and I tend to go with red lipgloss instead of lipstick. But I do love to have a voluptuous mouth and the weekend is just perfect to show it off... Just make sure your eyes are kept simple and you can wear a red lip at any age.

Thee dark jeans were paired with a printed jumper (woolen, of course!) in red, grey and black. I have mixed feelings for it: I love the boldness and the colors, but its lenght may become a problem at times, since it's almost cropped. Anyway, in spite of the sporty spirit of it, I like the way it suits me and makes a good saturday mate.

The grey jacket has been in my closet for a long time, but I still enjy putting it on every now and then. It shares the difficulty with the jumper: both are quite short and require a bottom that flatters my behind. The red belt and bag add a pop of color and the thin belt accentuates my waist line. My natural waist is quite high on my torso, so I prefer thin belts when not wearing belts lower than my natural line.

Sorry for the poor photos, but my camera just fell to the ground and died on me. Dear phone, rescue my post! And it did, though with such results... Have fun!

Tenho sempre algum receio de usar lábios vermelhos no trabalho e tenho tendência a preferir o lipgloss vermelho em detrimento do batom. Mas adoro ter uma boca voluptuosa e o fim-de-semana é perfeito para isso... Só é preciso ter em atenção que os olhos se mantêm simples e podemos usar lábios vermelhos em qualquer idade.

Os jeans escuros foram combinados com uma camisola de padrão (de lã, claro!) em vermelho, cinza e preto. Os meus sentimentos por esta camisola são confusos: adoro uma certa ousadia e as cores, mas o comprimento pode tornar-se problemático, pois é muito curta. Em todo o caso, e apesar de ser um pouco desportiva, gosto da forma como me assenta e é uma boa companheira de sábado.

O casaco cinzento está no meu armário há muito tempo, mas ainda gosto de usá-lo ocasionalmente. Partilha a dificuldade com a camisola: são ambos bastante curtos e precisam de uma parte de baixo que me favoreça o traseiro. O cinto vermelho e a mala dão o toque de cor e o cinto estreito acentua a cintura. A minha cintura é naturalmente alta, no tronco, e por isso prefiro cintos fininhos quando não são para usar abaixo da linha natural.

Desculpem a pobreza das fotos, mas a minha máquina caiu ao chão e morreu. Querido telemóvel, salva o meu post! E ele salvou, embora com os resultados que se vêem... Divirtam-se!

My outfit #10 - Textures

Sometimes I feel like playing with color but sometimes textures become the center of an outfit. Today was one of those days.

The all black skirt and jumper elongate my shape and the truth is that I love black for its elegance and forgiveness of any "bodily sins", but I try to bring other colors close to the face: aging skin and black can look too "harsh". Red is my favourite color and an absolutly perfect match for black, but how can I bring it to another level of interest? After all, it's a very classical and common combo...

The skirt is made of a woolen fabric but it has just a string of bright black woven in it, and that's the shine you see there. The coat is black and white with a small print and a nice texture and the scarf (my mom's gift) has yet another texture and a grey and burgundy flower attached. 

The red bag is a recent buy and adds some more texture, with it's snake feel. The ring and the earrings bring just an extra sparkle. I didn't wear a necklace because I believe the "less is more" rule does apply, specially when it comes to bold colors.

Por vezes, apetece-me brincar com a cor, mas às vezes as texturas tornam-se o centro de um conjunto. Hoje foi um desses dias.

O look em preto total foi dado pela saia e pela camisola, que alongam a figura, e a verdade é que adoro o preto pela sua elegância e pelo muito que perdoa dos "pecados corporais", mas tento trazer outras cores para junto do rosto: preto e uma pele a envelhecer pode ficar demasiado "duro". O vermelho é a minha cor preferida e uma combinação perfeita com o preto, mas como posso dar-lhe um outro nível de interesse? Afinal de contas, é uma mistura muito clássica e comum...

A saia é feita de lã mas tem um fio de preto brilhante no próprio tecido, e é esse brilho que se vê na foto. O casaco é preto e branco com um padrão miúdo em espinhado, com uma textura agradável, e o cachecol (presente da minha mãe) tem ainda uma outra textura, além de uma flor cinza e cor-de-vinho que está costurada sobre ele.

A mala vermelha é uma compra recente e acrescenta ainda mais textura, com o padrão cobra. O anel e os brincos trazem um brilho extra. Não usei um colar porque acredito que a regra "menos é mais" se aplica, sobretudo quando se trata de cores fortes-

My outfit #6 - Lady in red

It's been a particularly grey day around here, rainy and cold and the kind of day you only wish to stay home. But we didn't... Myself, B. and a friend of his went out to watch a major football game on TV at one of our local coffee shops. This kind of sunday doesn't ask for an elaborate outfit, but I'm not one to go out too sporty, so I made up a sporty style of my own.

I wore a red woolen dress that I absolutely love with a black jumper for warmth and added black leggings. This gave my too-mini dress a certain sense of properness and turned an otherwise too girly piece into something I'm comfortable in. And goes to show how older girls can wear leggings and look good. It felt so good, underneath all that wool!

I ended up with a coat I had left in the closet for over a year and now I find myself wearing it over and over. You can see it here as well. It's black and white for the most part, but its thin teal and red stripes make it a good match for many outfits, especially since plaid came into fashion like a hurricane.

I love statement jewelry, but I think big red earrings are enough today. And finally, I get to show you my new booties. I got them in Spain, in Talavera de la Reina, and they are very comfortable, in spite of the high heel. I always thought booties were best styled with jeans or trousers, but elegant ones are proving themselves worthy of being shown off with dresses and skirts. For us, 40+ girls, the right booties can add some youthfulness to an outfit but keep style and elegance.

O dia hoje está particularmente cinzento, chuvoso e frio, exactamente o tipo de dia no qual se quer ficar em casa. Mas nós não ficámos… Eu, o B. e um amigo dele fomos ver um grande jogo de futebol na televisão, no café aqui perto. Este é o tipo de domingo que não pede uma roupa elaborada, mas não sou mulher de andar demasiado desportiva e por isso inventei um estilo desportivo só meu.

Usei um vestido vermelho de lã que adoro e juntei-lhe uma camisola preta para ficar mais quentinho e ainda umas leggings pretas. Isto proporcionou ao meu vestido demasiado mini um certo ar mais adequado e transformou uma peça que seria demasiado agarotada em algo no qual me sinto bem. E ainda mostra como as raparigas mais velhas podem usar leggings e ter um ar óptimo. Estava tão bem sob aquela lã toda!

Acabei por usar um casaco que tinha deixado no armário durante mais de um ano e agora dou comigo a usá-lo muito. Podem vê-lo aqui também. É sobretudo preto e branco, mas tem também riscas finas vermelhas e azul-petróleo que o tornam numa boa aposta para vários conjuntos, especialmente desde que o tartan invadiu a moda como um furacão.

Adoro bijuteria ousada, mas acho que brincos grandes e vermelhos são suficientes para hoje. E finalmente consigo mostrar-vos os meus novos botins. Comprei-os em Espanha, em Talavera de la Reina, e são muito confortáveis, apesar do salto alto. Sempre achei que os botins ficavam melhor com calças, mas os que são elegantes como estes andam a provar-me que são dignos de saias e vestidos. Para nós, raparigas de 40+, podem mesmo ser a forma de acrescentar frescura a um conjunto, mantendo o estilo e a elegância.

Uma mulher com mais de 50 anos e com grande sentido de estilo e de elegância. Escolheu um conjunto colorido, mas conseguiu manter a suavidade e a classe. Adoro este visual! 

My outfit #2 - Sexy 40's

Yesterday was B's birthday. B is the man in my life and he simply loves to see me in heels and mini-skirts and he doesn't care that I'm over 40 or that I may wonder if it's age appropriate, which sometimes I think it's not. But, since it was his birthday, I chose my outfit as another of my birthday gifts.


I had to find a way to wear a short dress and not to look over the top, so I went for a little black dress in faux leather and paired it with lace stockings and high heel boots over the knee, so my legs wouldn't show too much. To give the look a softer touch, I chose a white top to go under the sleeveless dress and finished with a red loose cardigan and a red scarf, which are not a set but really look like they do. The cardigan has 3/4 sleeves, so it shows all the layers of fabric and provides more brightness.

I wore 2 rings, the black stones one to match the black watch and a silver one with a clear stone. I bought it many years ago, in 1998, when Portugal hosted the Expo 98. I got it at Pakistan's pavillion and its a beautiful handmade piece. I wore pearl pendant neckless and earrings for an even more feminine look and also because I think pearls become a very good friend when skin ages, because of the light they catch and the warmth they provide to our face.

Yes, we can wear a mini-skirt over 40: just make sure you do it right and keep it elegant and classy.

Ontem, foi o aniversário do B. O B é o homem da minha vida e simplesmente adora ver-me de saltos altos e mini-saia. Não quer saber se já passei dos 40 ou se acho que não é adequado à idade (e às vezes não acho mesmo). Mas, já que era o aniversário dele, escolhi a roupa de forma a ser mais um dos presentes. 

Tive que encontrar forma de usar um vestido curto e não parecer espalhafatosa, por isso a escolha recaiu sobre um vestido preto em imitação de pele e combinei-o com meias de renda e botas de salto alto e acima de joelho, de forma a que as pernas não aparecessem muito.  Para suavizar, escolhi um top branco para colocar sob o vestido, que não tem mangas, e terminei com um cardigan vermelho e solto e um cachecol vermelho, que não pertencem a um mesmo conjunto, mas parece. O cardigan tem mangas 3/4 e por isso aparecem as várias camadas de tecido e dá uma luminosidade maior.

Usei 2 anéis, o de pedras pretas para combinar com o relógio preto e um de prata com pedra transparente. Este foi comprado há muitos anos, em 1998, quando Portugal foi o anfitrião da Expo 98. Comprei-o no pavilhão do Paquistão e é uma bela peça artesanal. Usei um pendente e brincos, ambos de pérolas, para um visual ainda mais feminino e também porque acho que as pérolas se tornam grandes amigas nossas quando a pele envelhece, devido à luz que  atraem e à ar caloroso que dão ao nosso rosto.


Sim, podemos usar mini-saia depois dos 40, mas de forma correcta, mantendo a elegância e uma certa classe.

Chic Plaid!

Plaid is an absolute trend this Fall/Winter, but it doesn't have to be a baggy shirt over jeans. As a matter os fact, it shouldn't be after you leave college and least of all over 40. So I have a few looks on "chic plaid", keeping it classy while trendy.

O tartan é uma tendência absoluta este Outono/Inverno, mas não tem que ser uma camisa larga sobre jeans. Na realidade, não deveria mesmo sê-lo depois de deixarmos a faculdade e muito menos quando se tem mais de 40 anos. Por isso trago aqui alguns looks de "tartan chique", que permite manter a classe e seguir as tendências.

Plaid trend - Tendência tartan

A woman in her 40' or 50' may wear most fashion trends. The trick is to choose pieces that flatter the body type and keep the image we want to portrait of ourselves. I prefer the elegant look and to display some class. I's always affraid of trying too hard to look younger and I believe keeping the balance between fashion and what's age and body type approprate to be of extreme importance

Claro que uma mulher de 40 ou 50 anos pode usar a maioria as tendências da moda. O truque é escolher peças que favoreçam o tipo de corpo de cada uma e que mantenham a imagem que queremos transmitir de nós mesmas. No meu caso, gosto de um look elegante e de tentar mostrar alguma classe. Tenho sempre um certo receio de querer parecer demasiado jovem e acho muito importante conseguir o equilíbrio entre o que está na moda e o que me fica bem, em termos de idade e de tipo de corpo.



Today, I chose the tartan trend, a must in this fall/winter. This pattern can be found in many colours, but seems to be displayed mostly in red and black. I love these colour and will surely embrace tartan.

Hoje, resolvi pegar numa tendência que está claramente em alta neste outono/inverno, o tartan. Embora seja possível encontrar este padrão em muitas cores, ele surge este ano sobretudo em preto, branco e vermelho. Eu adoro estas cores e vou render-me ao quadriculado, isso é mais do que certo.

This tartan look is all about 2 colours, red and black. The cape is a very trendy piece (capes are a must have this year and always provide a certain lady-like look) and is joined by a very simple tube dress. All the accessories are black and nothing steals the stage from the cape. I'm in love with the gloves and the shoes!

Nesta sugestão de look tartan, apostei em 2 cores, vermelho e preto. A capa é a peça de tendência (as capas são um must deste ano e dão sempre um certo ar de lady-like) e é complementada por um vestido-tubo completamente simples. Todos os acessórios são pretos e nada concorre com a capa quanto ao protagonismo, mas estou apaixonada pelas luvas e pelos sapatos!

This was put together on a budget, mas some of the pieces are by no means cheap. They can always be replaced with low cost or vintage pre-owned pieces. I would only have to purchase the cape itself to have the full look. What do you think of tartan? Will you wear it?

Tentei manter os custos controlados, mas algumas peças não são nada baratas. Podem sempre ser substituídas por versões mais low cost ou por peças que tenham em casa. Por exemplo, eu só precisaria comprar a capa para conseguir este look. O que acham do tartan? Vão usar?
