Can red lips be casual?

I'm always a bit self conscious when it comes to wear red lips to work and I tend to go with red lipgloss instead of lipstick. But I do love to have a voluptuous mouth and the weekend is just perfect to show it off... Just make sure your eyes are kept simple and you can wear a red lip at any age.

Thee dark jeans were paired with a printed jumper (woolen, of course!) in red, grey and black. I have mixed feelings for it: I love the boldness and the colors, but its lenght may become a problem at times, since it's almost cropped. Anyway, in spite of the sporty spirit of it, I like the way it suits me and makes a good saturday mate.

The grey jacket has been in my closet for a long time, but I still enjy putting it on every now and then. It shares the difficulty with the jumper: both are quite short and require a bottom that flatters my behind. The red belt and bag add a pop of color and the thin belt accentuates my waist line. My natural waist is quite high on my torso, so I prefer thin belts when not wearing belts lower than my natural line.

Sorry for the poor photos, but my camera just fell to the ground and died on me. Dear phone, rescue my post! And it did, though with such results... Have fun!

Tenho sempre algum receio de usar lábios vermelhos no trabalho e tenho tendência a preferir o lipgloss vermelho em detrimento do batom. Mas adoro ter uma boca voluptuosa e o fim-de-semana é perfeito para isso... Só é preciso ter em atenção que os olhos se mantêm simples e podemos usar lábios vermelhos em qualquer idade.

Os jeans escuros foram combinados com uma camisola de padrão (de lã, claro!) em vermelho, cinza e preto. Os meus sentimentos por esta camisola são confusos: adoro uma certa ousadia e as cores, mas o comprimento pode tornar-se problemático, pois é muito curta. Em todo o caso, e apesar de ser um pouco desportiva, gosto da forma como me assenta e é uma boa companheira de sábado.

O casaco cinzento está no meu armário há muito tempo, mas ainda gosto de usá-lo ocasionalmente. Partilha a dificuldade com a camisola: são ambos bastante curtos e precisam de uma parte de baixo que me favoreça o traseiro. O cinto vermelho e a mala dão o toque de cor e o cinto estreito acentua a cintura. A minha cintura é naturalmente alta, no tronco, e por isso prefiro cintos fininhos quando não são para usar abaixo da linha natural.

Desculpem a pobreza das fotos, mas a minha máquina caiu ao chão e morreu. Querido telemóvel, salva o meu post! E ele salvou, embora com os resultados que se vêem... Divirtam-se!

My outfit #12 - Cape day!

I got this cape at a street fair before Christmas because I fell in love with the colors and also because I thought it was a good way to do plaid, one of my favorite trends ever. The large collar is  begging for a brooch, so I made one to match the lighter color of the fabric (I actually made it myself!).

The dark grey jeans and the white jumper are the most common and simple pieces one can ever wear during winter. Can you imagine anything more "plain Jane" than this? But, since I'm not a plain Jane myself, I tried to bring it to planet elegance...

The trendy cape, a long uneven pearl necklace and a small vintage bag were my allies. It's all about details and accessories.

Comprei esta capa numa feira de rua antes do Natal porque me apaixonei pelas cores e também porque pensei que seria uma boa forma de usar o tartan, uma das minhas tendências preferidas de todos os tempos. A grande gola suplica um alfinete de peito e por isso fiz-lhe um a condizer com a cor mais clara do tecido (e fui eu mesma que fiz!).

Os jeans em cinza escuro e a camisola branca são as peças mais vulgares e simples que se podem usar no Inverno. Conseguem pensar em algo mais "Maria-sem-graça" do que isto? Mas, dado que eu mesma não sou uma "Maria-sem-graça", tentei trazer o conjunto para o planeta elegância... 

A capa bem actual, um longo e assimétrico colar de pérolas e uma pequena mala vintage foram os meus aliados. É tudo uma questão de detalhes e de acessórios.

My outfit #11 - Errands time

We all have to do it sometimes, but I deeply dislike running errands. When I really, really must go and can't delay it any longer, I spend an entire half a day at it. I had the aftertoon off today, and there I went, sad and lonely...

When I know I have a busy day ahead, I pay very close attention to my feet: comfy shoes are the first to be picked and become the most important piece of the outfit. These grey shoes are great: a high enough heel to make me feel elegant and tall, but also very comfortable and steady for walking. Wonderful shoes, indeed!

Grey jeans and a grey long cardigan match the shoes, but I was feeling like having color, so I wore a purplish jumper with a very large collar, something of a bib collar, really. It gave me not just the pop of color I was going for, but also some visual interest to the bust line. When an outfit is as simple as this, a different cleavage or a ruffle or a special embellishment can make a difference and add a touch of refinement. 

The bag is a recent buy and I love it: the golden spikes make it stand out and it's large enough to endure the huge load I stuff in it every single time I wear it... The earrings are just the perfect color for this jumper and they are also my favourite shape: the long and lean tear drops favour faces like mine, smaller on the lower half. 

As a special bonus to my boring afternoon, the sun came out and I was able to take the photos with real sunlight. Finally!

Todos temos que passar por isso de vez em quando, mas não gosto mesmo nada de fazer recados e tratar de assuntos pendentes. Quando tem mesmo, mesmo, que ser e já não posso adiar mais, gasto meio-dia nessa tarefa. Tinha a tarde de folga, hoje, e lá fui eu, triste e solitária...

Quando sei que tenho um dia cheio pela frente, escolho o calçado com a máxima atenção: sapatos confortáveis são a primeira e mais importante peça de vestuário. Estes sapatos cinzentos são óptimos: o salto é suficientemente alto para me fazer sentir alta e elegante, mas são estáveis e bons para andar. Excelentes sapatos, na verdade!

Jeans cinza e um cardigan longo e igualmente cinza combinam com os sapatos, mas apetecia-me usar algo colorido e usei uma camisola de um tom de púrpura com uma gola muito grande. A camisola deu não apenas a cor que fazia falta, mas também algum interesse à zona do peito. Quando um conjunto é tão simples como este, um decote diferente, um folho ou um enfeite podem fazer a diferença e acrescentar um toque de sofisticação.

A mala é uma compra recente e adoro-a: as aplicações douradas fazem-na sobressair e é suficientemente grande para suportar a carga que lhe ponho dentro de todas as vezes que a uso... Os brincos têm a cor perfeita para a camisola e têm também o formato ideal: as gotas longas e estreitas favorecem um rosto como o meu, que é mais estreito na parte inferior.

Como bónus especial para a minha tarde entediante, o Sol apareceu e pude tirar as fotos com luz solar. Finalmente!

My outfit #8 - Feeling purple

During winter, whenever I wear something that’s not made of a warm fabric I’m setting myself for disaster and regret. To prevent this from happening, I’ve got several woolen dresses that I love and wear a lot (too often, I wonder?).

One of these dresses is this one, by MO. It has a few colorful stripes that accentuate the waistline but I could never find a scarf that would match any of those colors to perfection. Until I visited Punt Roma a couple of weeks ago… Eureka! A long, purple, soft woolen scarf saved the day. And I found these earrings at C&A just this week, so here I am all matchy-matchy.

Durante o Inverno, quando uso alguma peça que não seja de um tecido bem quentinho, estou a preparar-me para o desastre e arrependimento. Para prevenir, tenho alguns vestidos de lã que adoro e uso com frequência (com demasiada frequência?).

Um desses vestidos é este, da MO. Tem algumas riscas coloridas que marcam a linha da cintura mas nunca tinha arranjado um cachecol que combinasse perfeitamente com alguma dessas cores. Até que fui à Punt Roma há umas semanas… Eureka! Um lenço de lã comprido, púrpura e macio salvou o dia. E encontrei estes brincos na C&A esta semana, por isso estou toda a combinar.

My outfit #7 - A grey day

I let the grey weather come into my outfit. I decided that I wanted to look elegant today and had the silly feeling that it wasn't going to be so cold. It was as cold as usual, of course, and I regretted the lack of wool, but I was happy with the mirror.


The pencil skirt has been in my closet for over 20 years and it's a dark navy blue, a color hard to find, but I managed to find tights with the same exact shade. I've heard about the rule that tights should be the same color as the shoes, but I think that if they are the same color of the skirt they elongate our legs and that's what I do. The same black booties I wore yesterday were a good choice for footware.













The grey jumper was way too thin, but the stronger shade of blue in the scarf did more than just pop color: it warmed my poor neck nicely. The coat was yet another shade of blue, more to the navy side, and the long earrings added even more blue, but a shiny one.

This winter, I've been wearing quite a lot of same color layers, mixing shades instead of colors, especially when it comes to blues and greys. I find this easier to do, when the low temperatures demand layers of clothing for protection, and also an elegant (and simple!) way of creating an outfit early in the morning, not requiring too much thought.

Deixei o cinzento do tempo entrar na minha roupa. Decidi que queria ter um ar elegante, hoje, e tive tonta sensação de que o tempo não estaria tão frio. Esteve tão frio como de costume, claro, e arrependi-me de não vestir lã, mas fiquei contente com o espelho.

A saia justa está no meu armário há mais de 20 anos e é de um azul-escuro mesmo escuro, uma cor difícil de encontrar, mas lá consegui encontrar meias da mesma cor. Tenho conhecimento da regra que diz que as meias devem ser da cor dos sapatos, mas acho que se forem da cor da saia alongam mais as pernas e é assim mesmo que me visto. Os mesmos botins preto que usei ontem foram uma boa escolha para os pés.

A camisola cinza era demasiado fininha, mas o tom de azul mais forte do cachecol fez mais do que apenas juntar cor: aqueceu bem o meu pobre pescoço. O casaco era de um outro tom de azul, mais para o escuro, e os brincos compridos acrescentaram ainda mais azul, mas com brilho.

Este Inverno, tenho usado muitas vezes camadas da mesma cor, misturando tons em vez de cores, especialmente com azuis e cinzas. Acho que é mais fácil fazer assim, quando as baixas temperaturas exigem roupa em camadas, e é também uma forma elegante (e simples!) de criar um conjunto de manhã cedo, sem ser preciso pensar muito.

My outfit #6 - Lady in red

It's been a particularly grey day around here, rainy and cold and the kind of day you only wish to stay home. But we didn't... Myself, B. and a friend of his went out to watch a major football game on TV at one of our local coffee shops. This kind of sunday doesn't ask for an elaborate outfit, but I'm not one to go out too sporty, so I made up a sporty style of my own.

I wore a red woolen dress that I absolutely love with a black jumper for warmth and added black leggings. This gave my too-mini dress a certain sense of properness and turned an otherwise too girly piece into something I'm comfortable in. And goes to show how older girls can wear leggings and look good. It felt so good, underneath all that wool!

I ended up with a coat I had left in the closet for over a year and now I find myself wearing it over and over. You can see it here as well. It's black and white for the most part, but its thin teal and red stripes make it a good match for many outfits, especially since plaid came into fashion like a hurricane.

I love statement jewelry, but I think big red earrings are enough today. And finally, I get to show you my new booties. I got them in Spain, in Talavera de la Reina, and they are very comfortable, in spite of the high heel. I always thought booties were best styled with jeans or trousers, but elegant ones are proving themselves worthy of being shown off with dresses and skirts. For us, 40+ girls, the right booties can add some youthfulness to an outfit but keep style and elegance.

O dia hoje está particularmente cinzento, chuvoso e frio, exactamente o tipo de dia no qual se quer ficar em casa. Mas nós não ficámos… Eu, o B. e um amigo dele fomos ver um grande jogo de futebol na televisão, no café aqui perto. Este é o tipo de domingo que não pede uma roupa elaborada, mas não sou mulher de andar demasiado desportiva e por isso inventei um estilo desportivo só meu.

Usei um vestido vermelho de lã que adoro e juntei-lhe uma camisola preta para ficar mais quentinho e ainda umas leggings pretas. Isto proporcionou ao meu vestido demasiado mini um certo ar mais adequado e transformou uma peça que seria demasiado agarotada em algo no qual me sinto bem. E ainda mostra como as raparigas mais velhas podem usar leggings e ter um ar óptimo. Estava tão bem sob aquela lã toda!

Acabei por usar um casaco que tinha deixado no armário durante mais de um ano e agora dou comigo a usá-lo muito. Podem vê-lo aqui também. É sobretudo preto e branco, mas tem também riscas finas vermelhas e azul-petróleo que o tornam numa boa aposta para vários conjuntos, especialmente desde que o tartan invadiu a moda como um furacão.

Adoro bijuteria ousada, mas acho que brincos grandes e vermelhos são suficientes para hoje. E finalmente consigo mostrar-vos os meus novos botins. Comprei-os em Espanha, em Talavera de la Reina, e são muito confortáveis, apesar do salto alto. Sempre achei que os botins ficavam melhor com calças, mas os que são elegantes como estes andam a provar-me que são dignos de saias e vestidos. Para nós, raparigas de 40+, podem mesmo ser a forma de acrescentar frescura a um conjunto, mantendo o estilo e a elegância.

My outfit #5 - Teal saturday

Saturdays are quite often family-lunch days at B. parents' home and a time do dress up just a tiny little bit. We had a storm in Lisbon, today, and for the very first time in my whole life, my umbrella was destroyed by the wind. It was heartbreaking to see my favourite (and best) umbrella thorn apart like that. At least, I have an excuse to got shopping for a new one...



Not only it was a rainy day, but also a rather cold one, so I really wanted to go for the woolen pieces in my closet, but didn't want to look too gloomy, so I picked up a charcoal skirt with matching tights and boots but chose different shades of teal for the upper part. I wore 3 layers of teal, the lighter one being the scarf. I keept in mind Coco Chanel's statement that darker colours age our faces, so I went darker on the body and lighter next to the head. The skirt is quite unforgiving, so I wore a loose and sleeveless jumper over it and added a little interest with the scarf.

As I've mentioned before, I love plaid. And I happen to own an old jacket just with the right colours: grey and white, with a little red and teal. This was just what it took to make it an ensemble. The jewelry played a part too, from the watch to the earrings. I love bold statement earrings, but I belive they dont't go very well with necklaces, so this was the moment to wear these. I'm very fond of these earrings because they were the first I made for myself and are extra-light, therefore perfect for a whole day activity. As usual on family moments, the make up is neutral and natural.

Os sábados são frequentemente dias de almoço de família na casa dos pais do B. e são também ocasião para me aperaltar só um bocadinho pequenino. Hoje, tivemos uma tempestade em Lisboa e pela primeira vez na vida o meu chapéu-de-chuva foi totalmente destruído pelo vento. Foi um desgosto ver o meu chapéu-de-chuva preferido (e o melhor) despedaçado daquela maneira. Pelo menos sempre tenho desculpa para comprar um novo...

O dia não foi apenas chuvoso, mas também frio, e por isso queria usar peças de lã, mas não queria ter um ar demasiado sombrio. Por isso, escolhi uma saia cinza escuro, com collants e botas a condizer, mas preferi vários tons de azul-petróleo para a parte de cima. Usei 3 camadas de azul diferentes, sendo que a mais clara é a do cachecol. Lembrei-me da afirmação de Coco Chanel, que dizia que as cores escuras nos envelhecem o rosto, e por isso a parte mais escura foi para o corpo e a mais leve para a cabeça. A saia não perdoa nadinha, por isso usei uma camisola sem mangas e bastante solta por cima e acrescentei algum interesse com o cachecol.

Como já antes disse, adoro o tartan. E acontece que tenho um casaco já antigo com as cores certas: cinza e branco, com um toque de vermelho e de azul-petróleo. Foi tudo o que era necessário para criar um verdadeiro conjunto. A bijuteria teve um papel importante, desde o relógio aos brincos. Adoro brincos arrojados e grandes, mas acho que não ficam bem com colares, por isso este foi o momento certo para usar estes. Tenho um carinho especial por estes brincos, porque foram os primeiros que fiz para mim e são extra-leves, o que os torna perfeitos para andar um dia inteiro. Como é costume nas ocasiões familiares, a maquilhagem é neutra e natural.

Toledo - day 2

Another cold sunny day in Toledo. We walked for miles today, so I made sure I wore the most comfortable boots I brought. Lots of colour and a mini-skirt just made my style-day.

Outro dia frio e solarento em Toledo. Andámos quilómetros hoje, por isso quis usar as botas mais confortáveis que trouxe. Muita cor e uma mini-saia fizeram-me ganhar o dia em estilo.

My outifit #3 - Burgundy Christmas

I had my Christmas decorations set in place last weekend and so I decided to have my living room for a background today. It's cold in Lisbon and so I had to have the weather in mind when I chose the outfit his morning. 

The center piece was the skirt, which is qite flowy and light but has a very warm and autumnal feel to it. The top is an asymmetrical cleavage jumper, in burgundy, which is one the colours of the skirt. On top of it, a long, thick and very warm cardigan. It's brown (another colour in the skirt), but it a rich almost reddish tone, so it goes very well with burgundy. It has a beautiful collar, made of rabbit fur, and rabbit is an exception to my "no real fur" rule, as well as ox or pig, because these animals are not killed for the purpose of collecting their skin or fur. This collar and the length of the cardigan itself add to the comfort it provides.

I stand up for most of my days, so I have to be careful with shoes and boots. Today's are flat but knee high brown suede boots and I simply love them with dresses or skirts because they just don't look underdressed, no matter what you'd wear with them.

My jewelry was quite simple: golden pendant watch, golden earrings with a grey stone (quite matchy with the fur in the cardigan) and gold rings. The wrist watch is vintage, my parents gift for my 21st birthday, so many years ago. I wouldn't risk being late today!

Coloquei as decorações de Natal cá em casa no fim-de-semana passado e hoje resolvi usar a sala como fundo das fotografias. Está frio em Lisboa e isso exigiu que tivesse atenção ao tempo quando escolhi a roupa esta manhã.

A peça central foi a saia, que é bastante fina e esvoaçante, mas que tem um certo tom quente e outonal. O top tem um decote assimétrico e é uma camisola cor-de-vinho, que é uma das cores da saia. Por cima, vesti um longo, grosso e muito quentinho cardigan. É castanho (outro dos tons da saia), mas é um tom rico, quase avermelhado, que vai muito bem com o cor-de-vinho. tem uma linda gola de pele de coelho e a pele de coelho é uma excepção à minha regra de não usar peles verdadeiras, bem como a pele de vaca e a de porco, porque são animais que não são mortos para aproveitamento da pele. A gola e o próprio comprimento do cardigan aumentam o conforto da peça.

Passo a maior parte dos dias de pé, por isso tenho que ter atenção ao calçado. O de hoje são botas rasas, mas de cano alto, de camurça castanha, e adoro-as para usar com saias ou vestidos porque nunca parecem inferiores à roupa, qualquer que esta seja.

A minha bijuteria era bem simples: um relógio dourado pendente num fio, brincos dourados com pedra cinzenta (muito ao tom do pêlo do casaco) e anéis de ouro. O relógio de pulso é vintage e foi uma prenda dos meus pais pelo 21º aniversário, há já tantos anos. Hoje não corria o risco de me atrasar!

My outfit #2 - Sexy 40's

Yesterday was B's birthday. B is the man in my life and he simply loves to see me in heels and mini-skirts and he doesn't care that I'm over 40 or that I may wonder if it's age appropriate, which sometimes I think it's not. But, since it was his birthday, I chose my outfit as another of my birthday gifts.


I had to find a way to wear a short dress and not to look over the top, so I went for a little black dress in faux leather and paired it with lace stockings and high heel boots over the knee, so my legs wouldn't show too much. To give the look a softer touch, I chose a white top to go under the sleeveless dress and finished with a red loose cardigan and a red scarf, which are not a set but really look like they do. The cardigan has 3/4 sleeves, so it shows all the layers of fabric and provides more brightness.

I wore 2 rings, the black stones one to match the black watch and a silver one with a clear stone. I bought it many years ago, in 1998, when Portugal hosted the Expo 98. I got it at Pakistan's pavillion and its a beautiful handmade piece. I wore pearl pendant neckless and earrings for an even more feminine look and also because I think pearls become a very good friend when skin ages, because of the light they catch and the warmth they provide to our face.

Yes, we can wear a mini-skirt over 40: just make sure you do it right and keep it elegant and classy.

Ontem, foi o aniversário do B. O B é o homem da minha vida e simplesmente adora ver-me de saltos altos e mini-saia. Não quer saber se já passei dos 40 ou se acho que não é adequado à idade (e às vezes não acho mesmo). Mas, já que era o aniversário dele, escolhi a roupa de forma a ser mais um dos presentes. 

Tive que encontrar forma de usar um vestido curto e não parecer espalhafatosa, por isso a escolha recaiu sobre um vestido preto em imitação de pele e combinei-o com meias de renda e botas de salto alto e acima de joelho, de forma a que as pernas não aparecessem muito.  Para suavizar, escolhi um top branco para colocar sob o vestido, que não tem mangas, e terminei com um cardigan vermelho e solto e um cachecol vermelho, que não pertencem a um mesmo conjunto, mas parece. O cardigan tem mangas 3/4 e por isso aparecem as várias camadas de tecido e dá uma luminosidade maior.

Usei 2 anéis, o de pedras pretas para combinar com o relógio preto e um de prata com pedra transparente. Este foi comprado há muitos anos, em 1998, quando Portugal foi o anfitrião da Expo 98. Comprei-o no pavilhão do Paquistão e é uma bela peça artesanal. Usei um pendente e brincos, ambos de pérolas, para um visual ainda mais feminino e também porque acho que as pérolas se tornam grandes amigas nossas quando a pele envelhece, devido à luz que  atraem e à ar caloroso que dão ao nosso rosto.


Sim, podemos usar mini-saia depois dos 40, mas de forma correcta, mantendo a elegância e uma certa classe.
